As the culminating course in GCHFA's Music Theory sequence, Music Theory IV brings together the concepts of melody, harmony, and musical analysis to develop advanced musicianship. Students refine their understanding of harmonic structure while applying theory through composition, analysis, and four-part writing.
Topics include interval classification and inversion; advanced triads and chord inversions; seventh chords and dominant seventh (V7) harmony; relative and parallel keys; diatonic, chromatic, whole-tone, and minor scales; cadences and voice leading; four-part harmony and harmonic analysis; transposition; melody writing; musical vocabulary; and ear training. By the end of the course, students will possess a comprehensive understanding of music theory and the analytical skills needed to confidently interpret, perform, compose, and study music at an advanced level.
Recommended concurrent enrollment: Advanced Band, Advanced Orchestra, Mixed Choir; a placement test must be completed in order to enroll.
