Building on the concepts introduced in Music Theory II, Music Theory III challenges students to deepen their understanding of harmony, rhythm, and musical structure. Students strengthen their analytical skills while exploring more advanced harmonic relationships and applying theory through composition and practical musicianship.
Topics include melodic and harmonic intervals; augmented, diminished, and perfect intervals; chromatic and diatonic half steps; major and minor triads; chord inversions; relative minor keys; the Circle of Fifths in minor keys; natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales; compound and irregular meter, including 6/8 and cut time; conducting patterns; transposition; composition; musical vocabulary; and ear training.
Recommended concurrent enrollment: Intermediate or Advanced Band, Intermediate or Advanced Orchestra, Mixed Choir; a placement test must be completed in order to enroll.
